Azimuth Forestry Company needed a shared-access locking system that was convenient for authorized users while also providing durable protection across its expansive properties. With numerous gates and access roads to manage, the company needed a reliable way to provide access to multiple users without relying on shared keys or combinations.
The Challenge
Azimuth Forestry had previously used traditional daisy chains of padlocks, with locks from multiple site users connected together to secure gates and access roads.
While simple in concept, daisy chains can create several access and security problems:
- Accidental lockouts: If one user reconnects the locks incorrectly or bypasses—or “jumps”—another user's padlock, an authorized user can be locked out even though their padlock remains on the gate.
- Unauthorized locks: A daisy chain provides little control over additional locks being added, making it difficult for the site owner to determine which locks belong to authorized users.
- An unsecured gate: If a lock within the chain is left open or the chain is reconnected incorrectly, the gate may not be secured as intended.
For an organization managing multiple gates, these problems can become even more difficult to control from one location to another.
The Solution
Azimuth Forestry replaced daisy-chain arrangements at certain gates with Everlock SLC-4 Multi-User Gate Lock Systems.
The SLC-4 provides designated locking positions for up to four authorized users, allowing each party to maintain access using its own padlock and keys. This provides a purpose-built shared-access arrangement while helping prevent the accidental lockouts associated with improperly connected daisy chains.
Azimuth purchased multiple SLC-4 units for gates and access roads across its properties, creating a more consistent approach to shared access.
The Results
Azimuth Forestry has been pleased with its Everlock systems. The new locking arrangement helps improve access control, reduce the potential for accidental lockouts, and maintain shared access for contractors, service providers, public agencies, and other authorized users as needed.
