Couple Accidentally Infiltrates Atomic Power Plant – How a Multi-Locking System Could Have Helped
The York Sunday Record, a division of USA Today, recently reported a story about a couple who cut a lock at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station.
According to police, the couple somehow managed to drive onto the property and could not find their way out. Upon arriving at a “secured fenced-in area,” they opted to cut the chain to the main gate.
Though they were on the property the entire time, the couple never made it to a highly secure, sensitive area where radioactive material is present.
Police documents state that if the couple had infiltrated that specific area, the security staff would have been forced to place the entire plant on lockdown, adding that there would have been a “possibility of lethal force being used.”
How scary! Whether it’s a couple looking to find a way out or a perpetrator intending to do harm, the importance of properly controlling shared access sites remains the same. Clearly this atomic power station needs better security, and one of Everlock Systems’ patented multi-locking systems would have provided that.
Our American-made products include the following features:
- Accept most standard padlocks, including puck locks
- Prevents unauthorized padlocks from being added
- Steel bolt cutter guards between each padlock
- Reversible for easy installation and easy use in the field
- Made from high-strength steel with protective zinc coating for years of service
- Each lock is available for multiple users
- Eliminates the ineffective method of a daisy chain
The example of the atomic power plant infiltration is an incident that is both alarming and eye opening. Had the atomic power station used one of our multi-locking systems, the facility would not have faced this problem in the first place.
Luckily nobody was hurt, including the lost couple, security staff on duty that night and any local neighborhoods that could have been affected by an atomic leak. However, for the safety of everyone, it’s important to utilize a proper shared access lock system such as Everlock’s—especially at a facility that is as sensitive as an atomic power plant.
